I have the following question: Let F_q be the finite field with q = p^n elements (p being any prime), and let x be a generator for the multiplicative group of Fq. Assume that the elements of F_q be represented by polynomials in x over F_p of degree < n. Is there a way to know, without carrying explicit calculations, the powers of x that correspond to polynomials of degree 1, that is, the integers k such that x^k = ax+b, a,b in F_p ? Are these *special* integers? Thanx. -andrea
