NOAA COLLOQUIUM ON OPERATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL PREDICTION
SILVER SPRING, MD
8 JUNE-2 JULY 1993
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
(NOAA) will again sponsor a four-week colloquium on operational
environmental prediction to be held at the new NOAA complex in
Silver Spring, Maryland from 8 June through 2 July, 1993.
The purpose of the colloquium is to encourage graduate students
who are in stages of a relevant doctoral program to pursue
careers in the environmental sciences. The colloquium will
consist of a series of lectures and interactive workshops and
demonstrations on various aspects of environmental prediction
conducted at NOAA, and afford opportunities for discussions with
NOAA scientists. The lectures will include the following topics:
Climate Monitoring and Prediction;
Weather Analysis and Prediction;
Hydrologic Prediction;
Oceanographic Prediction and
Coastal Ocean Processes;
Satellite Products for Numerical
Weather Prediction and Climate
and Global Change Studies;
Living Marine Resources.
Organization:
The colloquium is being coordinated by an organizing committee
composed of representatives from the various NOAA line offices
and the University of Maryland. The lectures will be presented
primarily by scientists within NOAA who are experts in the
colloquium topics. A few invited speakers will provide
additional expertise to the program. Lecture notes will be
prepared by the students working iteratively with the lecturers,
and published following the conclusion of the colloquium. Ample
time will be provided between lecturers for discussion and
consultation with the lecturers.
Participants and Support:
It is anticipated that approximately 20 students will be selected
for the program. Participants are expected to be PhD. candidates
who have recently been accepted in a doctoral program and who
have an established or developing interest in the environmental
sciences. Each participant in the program will receive a stipend
of $2,000. In addition, the actual cost of travel, not to exceed
the expenses of economy travel, dormitory housing on the campus
of the University of Maryland, and daily local transportation
will be provided.
Application Procedures:
To apply, please send a letter of application stating your
interest in the environmental sciences. The application
materials must include:
Transcripts for undergraduate and graduate courses;
A resume which should include any publications,
fellowships, and awards received and;
Three letters of recommendation from faculty members who
know your work well.
The transcripts and letters of recommendation must be sent
directly by the university and faculty members to the address
below. The deadline for receipt of applications is February15,
1993. Awards will be announced about April 1, 1993. All
