Every year the colleges of Cambridge University offer a number of research fellowships intended for highly qualified candidates with, or just about to finish, a Ph.D. (or equivalent). The terms and conditions vary from college to college, so I have compiled an _informal_ and _unauthorised_ guide for applicants unfamiliar with the Cambridge system (intended for mathematicians but of interest, I hope, in all subjects). It is available by anonymous FTP from /pub/twk/fellow.tex on can.pmms.cam.ac.uk (131.111.24.28) or hard copy from the address below. T.W.
