Is it legal to use the usual student's t test to test whether a single sample is taken from a larger sample? i.e. I have an average of previous samples and their variance, can I determine if a new sample is from the same distribution with some confidence the same way I would check if the average were equal to some expected value? It doesn't seem quite right to check the same way. The usual test asks about the difference between the sampled average and the expected value. My test will ask about the difference between the sampled average and a sampled value. Jack Vinson The Purple Puddle Eater vinson@shiva.seas.upenn.edu vinson@unagi.cis.upenn.edu
