There is a very simple solution: X number of shots Y event that first shot causes death now E(X) = E(X given Y)P(Y)+E(X given not Y)P(not Y) and E(X) = m E(X given Y) = 1 of course E(X given not Y) = m+1 this was the trick! fill in the details yourself. Anders H
