Has anyone reviewed the research concerning the long term (> 6 mths) use of MAOI inhibitors such as phenelzine? Other than tyramine reactions and the other complications listed in the PDR; insert, are there any psychiatric or neurological adverse effects in long-term use at standard dosages? Patients have reported to me that the mood enhancing and other positive effects recede after a month or two of use. Anyone have any knowledgeable input? Feel free to email me. -----------== Posted via Deja News, The Discussion Network ==---------- http://www.dejanews.com/ Search, Read, Discuss, or Start Your Own

Anyone have any knowledgeable input? "Loss of antidepressant effect with long-term monoamine oxidase inhibitor treatment without loss of monoamine oxidase inhibition" (J.J. Mann, J. Clin. Psychopharm v.3 n.6 (12/83)) is one article on the subject. I'm sure there are others. Anecdotally, MAOI tolerance does happen. Some psychopharmacologists have looked into ways to prevent antidepressant tolerance, although I'm not sure if this has been studied methodically and/or with MAOIs specifically. -elizabeth
