The book goes on to describe several amazing feats pulled off by the use of light on mammals, including the author's own arthritis going into remission once he started spending a significant amount of time outdoors every day. He talks of friends who have likewise felt better after going through the same regimen. All of this makes me a little skeptical. Well, more than a little skeptical. The topper came when he claimed that the type of light used in one woman's chinchilla farm helped determine the gender of the litters - even when the new lighting had been installed 1/3 to 1/2 of the way through the gestation period. So now I'm highly skeptical. I hate to say this about any book, but I've given up on it and I've stopped reading it. I got bogged down in his puzzled accounts of his attempts to get the scientific community to look into his discoveries, and his repeated rejections when he applied for grants. Of course, during this time he constructed no actual experiments to show what he wanted to prove. All of his evidence is anecdotal. The author strikes me as a tinkerer who doesn't really care about all that stuff about scientific method. He has no degree in science (he was given an honorary B.S. by some college), and he didn't seem to be terribly interested in learning enough science to answer his questions. But still, there are questions. There is mention later on of things like electronics companies recalling TV sets and a Congressional investigation that he calls "the case of the tired children". So my question is this. Is there any validity at all to this guy's assertions about the effect of light on mammals or even plants? Has any work been done in this vein? I'm interested in finding out, but I just can't read this book any longer. This book doesn't tell me anything, and I just get frustrated by this guy's attitude.
