Science merely constructs "rational" explanations of observable phenomena. For example, it is impossible to "verify" one way or the other whether or not molecules exist: scientists use molecular models because they are very good at explaining things we see. There are several schools of thought that hold that the explanations that scientists concoct somehow approximate The Truth, but this is a philosophical (or even theological) position, and more on this kind of thing can be found in sci.philosophy.meta and sci.philosophy.tech. -----Greg McColm
