Of course they couldn't.  It takes a large and prosperous society to
support the hundreds of specialized skills necessary for the task you
describe.  In order to accomplish what you ask you would need
thousands of well fed people including miners, mining engineers,
metalurgists, carpenters, smelters, machinists, electrical and
mechanical engineers and technicians, potters, glass blowers,
chemists, smiths, etc, etc, and (god forbid) probably some managers.
You would also need a wide range of raw materials in addition to
metalic ores.

P.S.  Unless you are talking about a linear stepper motor (which I
have never heard of) it is meaningless to specify the accuracy of a
stepper motor in anything other than angular units.

P.P.S. How about we put Derek on a desert island with the goal of
producing something that makes sense.  It would be interesting to see
if he could do it within his lifetime.
