There was an article about this light source within the last couple of
issues of either Technology Review or Discover Magazine. I don't
specifically remember where I saw the article.

As I recall, light was generated via excitation of some material by the
microwaves somewhat analogous to the way flourescent lights work. There
was not a need for a working gas such as neon in the bulb.

As far as harmful effects due to microwave power, it appeared this would
be no greater problem than say microwave ovens.
