Moreover, there must have been a temptation to write without reference to more recent events so as to make the gospels appear older thanm they are and thus gain more credibility. If one were to roll up fifty, seventy or a hundred years after Jesus' death and claim to have compiled an eyewitness account of his life, reasonable doubts might emerge -- and that would not have been acceptable to the cult leaders.
