Time travel has preoccupied writers from H.G. > Wells to Martin Amis and provided Hollywood with a steady stream of > box-office hits, from the Back to the Future series to Denzel > Washington's most recent thriller, Deja Vu. But will it ever be > possible to duck back and forth between the ages? In The New Time > Travelers, David Toomey argues a qualified yes......Broadly, Toomey > says, exploiting relativity could help with travel into the future. > All we need, he contends, is the technology necessary to journey > through space at something approaching the speed of light or to > position ourselves in orbit around a black hole. Under such conditions > our own time slows (it's an effect called time dilation); we wait for > the calculated period and then return to Earth to find that the > required number of years have passed. Simple......The technology of > travelling into the past is problematic......Simply stated, it means > that if we travel back to 1929 with the aim of killing Hitler before > he becomes a major problem, something - a misfiring gun, a missed > train or something equally irksome - will thwart us. But Toomey > explains that a handily placed wormhole subjected to time dilation > might help to navigate the past, regardless of any influence we might > exert when we arrive." http://www.telegraph.co.uk/arts/main.jhtml?xml=/arts/2007/10/25/bomal120.xml Making time travel a reality....A year later, he read a 15 cent illustrated redaction of H G Wells's classic novel The Time Machine, which gave him the idea to build a device that would allow him to return to 1955 and save his father's life. So far the story is fabulous, painful and babyish, the stuff of Hollywood - but fast- forward 47 years to June 2002, and the same Ronald Mallett, now professor of theoretical physics at the University of Connecticut, is delivering a paper in Washington to around 50 of the world's most distinguished physicists at the International Association for Relativistic Dynamics third biennial conference, in which he explains how a machine involving a circuit of lasers could, in theory, send a particle backwards in time.....It has long been known that Einstein's relativity allows for certain forms of theoretical time travel.....Mallett is still working on his prototype, which he believes is capable of creating a closed loop in time. "As for travelling into the past, I believe it will ultimately happen," he says, but the tragedy he concedes is that he will never get to see his father again even if his machine is ready by tomorrow: for it will only allow him back as far as the moment when it was first switched on. The question the reader must ask is how seriously this should be taken. There can be no doubting the author's sincerity or the strength of his convictions. Scientific objections to his theory may be found on the internet but are not treated at any length in the book. As a psychological portrait of a person irreparably damaged by the death of a parent, and of a theoretical physicist anxious that he will never be taken seriously because he is black, working on time machines and driven by emotion, this book makes for absorbing reading." So absorbing reading is guaranteed. People SHOULD buy Mallett's book - in any event, their money will go to "a person irreparably damaged by the death of a parent". There is compassion in Einstein zombie world. Pentcho Valev
