Well, if after some millions of years nature converts excess CO2 in
the atmosphere back into fossil fuel, we probably will end up with a
"pretty flat" trend line as you desire.

In the meantime though the current upward "fluctuation" has an upward
trend line, meaning that in the coming decades we can expect the
harmful effects of global warming to become more apparent.
