Actually, there's quite a bit of evidence that the Star Trek transporters make use of the genetic structure of the organism being transported to reconstruct the organism, which is where all these silly "you got screwed up by (the transporter, the experimental warp drive, some alien disease) and you (will age rapidly, became a child, now have an evil twin, or whatever), but we can fix/modify the transporter and use it to resequence your DNA" plots come from. If so, transporters become a cancer eliminator; one could program the 'bio-filters' such that structures that arise from 'bad' genes won't get reproduced. OTOH, remember the 'scramble cases' in Star Trek:The Motion Picture? What a way to die... Speaking of cancer (and drifting even further off topic) there was a nice scene in the movie Star Trek:First Contact. A 21-century Earth character mentioned that her mother had died of cancer, and mourned the fact that "before the war" someone diagnosed with cancer just got a shot, had a one month checkup and that was it. -- John D.
