One determining factor of a different species (as opposed to a different race) is the ability to cross-breed successfully and produce fertile offspring. Guess what. The North American leopard frog, once thought to exist in different races (not species) from Canada to Central America has actually evolved into different species. The Mexican leopard frog has adapted to its climate so as to tolerate high temperature while the Vermont leopard frog has adapted to much colder climates. This differentiation has been so thorough that the two species can no longer inter-breed. You may wish to be careful with the "A frog is still a frog." argument (unless you want to make yourself look like a dope). Subtle differences in physical appearance or biochemical response are quite significant as markers for different species. The monarch and the viceroy butterflys are good examples. Different species of frogs have very different genes. Chuck Szmanda chucksz@ultranet.com
