I hate how these newsgroups delete everything after awhile. If someone could repost the original thing, I'd be much obliged. (thus, I am not responding neccessarily to this particular person but to the thread itself). Anyway. Consciousness has absolutely nothing to do with any of the statements made here. (I love these sweeping generalizations, don't you?) This is all explaining about the brain and a little bit about how it works. This is Thought. Thought is a relationship of processes required to make some sort of decision. By this definition, a computer thinks. It goes through processes, some of them involving memory and perception, and it makes a decision. What is consciousness then? The computer does not know that it is doing these things. It simply does them. The awareness that "there is decision" or "there is perception" or "there is feeling" is CONSCIOUSNESS. Our brain is an organ for thought. As such, it thinks. The question is: Can that which thinks know that it thinks? I don't know. If the answer is yes, then consciousness can be contained within the brain and much of what has been said here could be true. Containment, of course, requires that consciousness not go outside the physical limits of the mind. This does not mean that psychic things cannot happen. It just means that they are a method of perception of some force, not a product of expanded consciousness. I personally like the "no" answer better. In this case it is a third "party" that is conscious that "there is thinking" &c. This third party would be consciousness. No more, no less. Don't know if that's logical, but oh well. Most of these ideas sort of come from Buddhism. That's not true. They come from my understanding of Buddhism. Which is way way way below complete athough way above average(for a person, not a buddhist). Anyway, take 'em or leave 'em. I'd like to hear responses and thoughts. But don't email me expecting a "good" argument. People never benefit from arguments. Just look at it with an open mind and argue with your- self. You're probably the only one you'll believe anyway. Evan (that was fun! lets do it again.)
