Water waves, in fact, do not have the same phase and group velocities. Observation will show that an individual wave crest in a group of waves will move faster than the group, eventually reaching the front of the group, where it will in effect disappear. New wavecrests, are in a similar way, constantly appearing at the rear of the group. The velocity of each individual wave is faster than the velocity of the group, which is also the velocity with which the waves transmit energy. (This information taken from the text for a 4th year coastal geomorphology course, but I don't have the reference handy--I've sold the book) Pete
