I'm a graduate student nearing the end of my dissertation, so the
student loan deferment issue is one I have checked into a bit.
I believe there's been some suggestion of the "fellowship deferment."
In talking to my lenders (before the Gov. took over all student loan
lending at my institution) the fellowship deferment is acceptable as
long as you submit a short (1 page) synosis of the work and get a
supervisor's signature.
One other suggestion I would like to make, though, is to contact
Sallie Mae (SLMA). They will buy all your student loans (as long as
you're in the grace or payback period) and give you the dollar-average
interest rate on your original loans (usually about 8%). Depending on
the amount you owe, you may take upto 30 years to pay it off. They
also offer a payback option that only covers interest for the first 4
years of payback (a chance to get on your feet, so to speak). They
also offer an income-sensitive option (if you qualify) where your
monthly payment is a percentage of monthly income for the terms of the
loan.
I hope some of this of use. Cheers, Brad.
