--------------- Postdoctoral position as posted on Postdoc Jobs website: http://www.PostdocJobs.com --------------- POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH ASSOCIATE: AMYGDALA PHYSIOLOGY Available immediately to study mechanisms of chemosensory information processing in the medial amygdala. Input from the vomeronasal organ and olfactory system are essential for mating and for social interactions in hamsters. Chemosensory information converges at the medial amygdala where local circuits discriminate socially relevant from socially non-relevant input. We investigate responses to inputs from a broad range of conspecific and heterospecific sources, pheromone and non-pheromone, using in-vivo electrophysiology (acute and chronic) and c-fos/FRA protein immuno-cytochemistry. Current work focuses on the contribution of GABA inhibition to amygdala "decision making" circuits involved in categorizing sensory information. Two+ years of support are available on a funded NIH grant, at or above NIH postdoctoral fellowship level and including health insurance. Experience with in vivo electrophysiology (acute and/or chronic) and immuno-cytochemistry is essential. Knowledge of brain-slice electrophysiology is desirable for future projects. Lab management skills would be helpful. Florida State University Program in Neuroscience is a long established but still growing community of neuroscientists with an unusual degree of collegial cooperation. Program members have extensive federal funding including two training grants, and the Program maintains research support facilities available free or at low cost for all members, postdocs and students. Program faculty are based in the department of Biological Science, the department of Psychology, the department of Nutrition and in the new FSU Medical School. Tallahasee is a pleasant small-medium city, the State Capital, in north Florida close to beaches, clear-springs and major forest areas. Florida State University has renowned music, dance and theatre programs with many free events. Living expenses are relatively low and the sun is free: hot in August (but air conditioned is our middle name); gorgeous in Spring (starting mid February) and Fall (through November).
