What is the difference between an allergic reaction and a neurogenic inflammatory reaction? Please explain in terms that a layman can understand. I'm a RN, but this is not a field I'm understand very well. Is the following situation one that might be considered a neurogenic inflammatory response. I started having this reaction about 7 years ago when I was working in dialysis. Onset was sudden. I'm not looking for a diagnosis, just information. I do have an appointment with an allergist at a local teaching hospital the middle of Nov. I'm just trying to educate myself. I have a severe allergy? / response to something in fragrances. It has nothing to do with the odor as sometimes the reaction occurs before I can detect the odor. I read an article about Neurogenic inflammation triggered by Cranial Nerve V as being one theory of sensitivity to chemicals. My reaction is severe almost instant asthma to many (but not all) fragranced products. There are secondary symptoms that also occur. The longer the exposure the worse they are. For example if the fragrance causes coughing or minor wheezing rather than a life threatening reaction and I stay around it 5 minutes or more the secondary symptoms occur. The secondary symptoms are angioedema, trouble thinking clearly, fatigue, and muscle / joint aches (usually occur several hours after exposure). The asthmatic part of the reaction responds very quickly to Proventil inhalers and getting away from the source of the reaction. However the secondary symptoms last much longer. Some of symptoms such as the angioedema and fatigue are ones I also have to some of the things I'm allergic to such as mites, molds, and food allergies. Thanks for the info......educating myself gives me the illusion of having some control over something I have no control over. :-) Betty
