Easing WWW access to anon ftp servers

For those of you who distribute software or other information by way of
anonymous ftp, you can ease the access to this information for World-Wide
Web users by providing a read-me text on your ftp server marked up in HTML
in a file with extension .html .

In this HTML file, you can provide the necessary links with description
to the files on the ftp server. This makes the anonymous ftp server "look"
like a World Wide Web server with its consequent ease of use.

As an example, my DIFRAC programmes are held on anonymous ftp server
   ftp.unige.ch in subdirectory pub/soft/difrac
I have provided in the latter subdirectory an HTML file difrac.html which for
World-Wide Web users can be accessed by the URL:
   ftp://ftp.unige.ch/pub/soft/difrac/difrac.html
To pick up the relevant bits and pieces of the programme, the WWW user only
has to read and click.

If you already have a satisfactory read-me text as an ordinary "ASCII" file
and you are not quite sure how to mark it up in HTML, take a look at the
source code of the difrac.html file mentionned above. The HELP on most WWW
browsers gives clear indications on how to use HTML mark up and this is very
easy to learn. If all else fails you are welcome to e-mail me for further
advice.

One final point for WWW users. Some WWW browsers have trouble accessing some
anonymous ftp servers (e.g. Mosaic on Sun connecting to a VMS ftp server).
So if a "ftp" URL fails, try a direct ftp connection instead.
