INTRODUCTION

This is a semi regular posting to the unmoderated
newsgroup, "sci.techniques.xtallography". The main
aim of this newsgroup is to provide an open, easily accessible,
electronic conferencing system or bulletin board for the
crystallographic community on the internet. The newsgroups (in
theory) allow queries and discussion to take place in days to weeks,
that would take months to years (or not at all) on conventional paper
journals. Opportunities for informal discussion and exchange of
information and opinions that might only occur at international
conferences can routinely take place on the internet newsgroups.

Participants are welcome and encouraged to browse, read, follow-on,
post, and use this newsgroup as an information server, discussion area
and electronic conferencing system to its maximum advantage. Being an
unmoderated newsgroup, no one owns or runs this newsgroup so. Thus
participants should feel uninhibited to freely use this crystallographic
discussion forum.

=======================================

                            CHARTER

Following is part of the original charter for this newsgroup written up
during the newsgroup creation process. The main emphasis being
that this newsgroup is a discussion area for anything relevant to the
scientific discipline of crystallography.

It should be noted that concerns have been raised about participants
avoiding the peer-review process by publishing structures on this
discussion area that might be incorporated into crystallographic
databases. As around two out of five submitted structures have problems
or errors, it is thus recommended that this newsgroup not be used to
publish raw results and data that would normally go via the peer-review
process.

Topics for discussion include:
------------------------------

Powder diffraction (neutron/X-rays)
Single crystal diffraction
Electron diffraction
Crystal Structure determination
Structure determination
Rietveld Refinement
Software
Data formats
Databases
Hardware/Equipment - specs, alignment, opinions, etc.
Phase Identification - search match software/techniques/....
Discussion of complementary/confirmatory techniques :-
e.g.:- SEM, XRF, MicroProbe, AFM, STM, Optical Microscopy......
Applications to the fields of Mineralogy, Geology,
         Physics, Chemistry, Industry, etc.
Announcements/reviews of papers/conferences.
Preparation techniques.
Non-ambient techniques (high-pressure/temperature/??)
Discussion on the accuracy/validity of various structures
         and reference patterns.
General Discussion/opinions/questions.
Synchrotron radiation
Positions vacant
Crystallographic texture determination
Biological crystallography and applications
TEM (Transmission Electron Microscopy)
Structural analysis of disordered (i.e. amorphous) materials.

Anything else that is relevant to crystallography in general.

BIONET NEWSGROUPS

BIOLOGICAL CRYSTALLOGRAPHY NEWSGROUPS :

Most users would be aware of the biological crystallography newsgroups -

     bionet.xtallography
     bionet.molbio.protein
     bionet.structural-nmr
     bionet.molec-model

The bionet newsgroups can also be accessed via
email for those who do not have convenient Usenet access.

Extracted From :-
**** BIOSCI FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ) SHEET ****

New users of BIOSCI/bionet may want to read the "Frequently Asked
Questions" or "FAQ" sheet for BIOSCI. The FAQ provides details on how
to participate in these forums and is available for anonymous FTP from
net.bio.net [134.172.2.69] in pub/BIOSCI/biosci.FAQ or for retrieval
by gopher to net.bio.net, port 70. It may also be requested by
sending e-mail to biosci@net.bio.net (use plain English for your
request). The FAQ is also posted on the first of each month to the
newsgroup BIONEWS/bionet.announce immediately following the posting of
the BIOSCI information sheet.

-------------------

Biological users of sci.xtallography who wish to maximise
the audience for an article might want to consider posting
to sci.xtallography "and" bionet.xtallography. If this is
done within your newsreader properly, followon posts will
also appear in both newsgroups.

This (in theory) can also be done via email - by email to :-

sci.techniques.xtallography.usenet@decwrl.dec.com

and

bionet.xtallography.usenet@decwrl.dec.com

Using the alias facility of your email program can make this
a very easy procedure.

ANNOUNCING NEWSGROUP to EMAIL LINK for CRYSTALLOGRAPHY NEWSGROUP

                sci.techniques.xtallography
                ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

(Would people like to pass this on to colleagues who
may benefit from this announcement).

This is to announce that Email access has been created
for the general crystallography newsgroup -
sci.techniques.xtallography

This is thanks to Tim Buckner of the
Centre for Macromolecular Crystallography at
the University of Alabama (SYSTEM@ORION.CMC.UAB.EDU)
who has kindly setup this facility.

This link is presently only uni-directional but
participants can send articles to the newsgroup
via emailing/forwarding to a separate address as
explained below.

There may be a number of reasons you may like to use
this newsgroup to E-mail link.

-- You don't have internet newsgroup access.
-- Your existing news-server is rather unreliable.
-- The news to your part of the world is a bit slow.

=====================================================

SUBSCRIBING TO THE NEWSGROUP to MAIL GATEWAY (no cost)

To become a user of this facility, follow these
instructions (there is no cost involved).

================

TO JOIN TO THE NEWSGROUP TO EMAIL LIST :-

To join the sci.techniques.xtallography list send a mail message
to :-

sci_tech_xtal-Request@xtal.cmc.uab.edu

with ONLY the following is the body text of the message :-

subscribe

===========================================

CONFIRMATION of SUBSCRIPTION

You will then receive an email reply stating that you
have successfully joined the newsgroup to mail gateway
list and also receive a list of other commands you can
use with the "mailing-list".

Remember to send any "listserv" commands to :-

sci_tech_xtal-Request@xtal.cmc.uab.edu

A summary of commands follows :-

SIGNOFF - to remove yourself from the list
REVIEW - to get a list of subscribers
QUERY - to get the status of your entry on the list
SET NOMAIL - to remain on the list but not receive mail
SET MAIL - to reverse the NOMAIL setting
SET CONCEAL - to conceal yourself from REVIEW listings
SET NOCONCEAL - to reverse the CONCEAL setting
SET NOREPRO - to prevent the list from sending you your own postings
SET REPRO - to reverse the NOREPRO setting
LIST - to get a list of mailing lists available on this host
HELP - to receive a help file
QUIT - to terminate processing (skipping signature, etc.)

-------------

POSTING OUT ARTICLES

Even though this service is presently unidirectional, it is
still possible to post out articles to the newsgroup. This is
done my emailing (or forwarding followons) to :-

sci.techniques.xtallography.usenet@decwrl.dec.com

----------------

MAKING IT EASY TO SUBMIT ARTICLES AND MESSAGES

To make it easy to send articles and messages, try using the
"alias" facility of your email program:-

e.g. alias name email address

       xtal xtal newsgroup
                     sci.techniques.xtallography.usenet@decwrl.dec.com

Then when you want to send an article or query , just email it
to "xtal" and/or "bxtal" and your email software should
handle the rest.

==============================================================

If your email program does not support an "alias" option :-
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

a) Consider changing to a "better" email program such as
the public domain (i.e., free) "pine" software which is
available for UNIX, DOS and MS Windows.
This program is very user friendly and powerful.
To obtain binaries or source code, anonymous ftp to
ftp.cac.washington.edu:/pine (140.142.100.6:/pine).

Please email Lachlan Cranswick (lachlan@dmp.csiro.au) if you
have any difficulties/queries/comments or suggestions.

TENTATIVE GUIDELINES FOR POSTING OUT CV'S AND RESUMES.
TENTATIVE GUIDELINES FOR COMMERCIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS.

(Under construction)

MAXIMIZE READERSHIP OF ARTICLES BY CROSS POSTING.

You might find that some dicussion topics
or problems you are interested in
go beyond the scope of just crystallography,
and may also include other topics such as spectroscopy,
microscopy, materials, chemistry, physics, engineering,
biology, etc.

In this case, consider crossposting your article to other
relevant newsgroups using your newsreader so
that it has the best chance of reaching
the widest interested audience. (You have to be a bit careful
here not to excessively cross post as this can upset people.)

The other advantage of cross-posting is that any reply in
one newsgroup is posted to all the other newsgroups to
help continue the discussion. Thus method can be used
effectively to have a convenient multidisciplinary scientific
discussion. Readers are welcome to correct the idea that
the chance to have a multidisciplinary discussion is pretty
rare, even at international conferences, let alone in the lab.
However, (in theory) the newsgroups are able to do this on
a routine basis.

==================================

FAQ's (frequently asked question files)

One thing users might like to keep in mind is the idea of FAQs
(frequently asked question files). After discussion on a particular
topic, interested people might like to create an FAQ so that any
conclusions or interesting information are stored and are posted
regularly to limit the same discussion occurring every 6 months or so.

Examples of a crystallography FAQ might be :-

FAQ sci.techniques.xtallography - structure drawing software
FAQ sci.techniques.xtallography - molecular modelling software
FAQ - crystallography information services on the internet.
FAQ - how to find a colleague's email address on the internet.

Some of above topics have already been already discussed to some extent
in newsgroups such as sci.chem and sci.materials and thus might be
appropriate to create FAQs relatively soon.

=================================

FUTURE DESIRABLE ACTIONS FOR THIS NEWSGROUP

Based on email received, desirable actions for the near future
are :-

a) Expand awareness of this newsgroup amongst the crystallographic and
scientific community by announcments on relevant paper journals and
electronic information servers.

==================================

POSTING TO THIS NEWSGROUP VIA EMAIL

It is possible to post to this newsgroup via email by emailing
articles to :-

sci.techniques.xtallography.usenet@decwrl.dec.com

         or sci.techniques.xtallography@magnus.acs.ohio-state.edu
         or sci.techniques.xtallography@cass.ma02.bull.com

Everything else, such as title, and message text should be
done as per a normal email message.

As mentioned previously, using the "alias" facility of your
email program can make posting via email a very easy procedure.

=============================================================

READING THIS NEWSGROUP VIA GOPHER

It is also possible to read newsgroup articles by gopher server using
the following commands. This can also be of benefit if a local
newserver has died.

----------------------

             HINT - Using Gopher Bookmarks

Use the bookmark option of your gopher to enable you to go
directly to the relevant menu item.

In the UNIX generic gopher, goto the "xtallography" menu
option, type "a" and fill in the name.

To now revisit the xtallography area, all you have to do is
type "v" (view) and all you bookmarks will appear. Pick
the xtallography bookmark you typed in previously.

----------------------

Following are gopher servers listed here that can handle
reading of newsgroups via gopher :-

CSIRO Gopher

The help file follows...

SCI_TECH_XTAL_ARCHIVE information
---------------------

SCI_TECH_XTAL_ARCHIVE is a file distribution service that uses electronic mail
facilities to deliver files. To communicate with SCI_TECH_XTAL_ARCHIVE, send
an E-mail message to:
                      sci_tech_xtal_archive@xtal.cmc.uab.edu

Commands are sent in the body of the message you send to SCI_TECH_XTAL_ARCHIVE.
Several commands may be sent at one time; just put one command per line.

SCI_TECH_XTAL_ARCHIVE Commands:

SENDME package Sends all parts of the specified package.
SENDME package.n Sends part 'n' of the specified package.

LIST [pattern] Gives brief description of all packages
matching "pattern". If pattern is omitted,
a description of all packages is sent.

ADDRESS <addr> Specifies a valid address that is to be
used instead of the "From:" address for any
files sent. Useful when addresses arrive
in an invalid format. The output from any
commands specified after the ADDRESS line
                         is sent to that address.

QUIT Ignore all remaining lines following QUIT.
Used to prevent interpretation of signatures.

    HELP Sends this file.

Commands may be abbreviated. DIRECTORY is a synonym for LIST.

For each request you make, a transaction log is returned to you
indicating the status of the request. The status report will indicate
whether the request was successfully completed, and when the file was or
will be sent. Large files are sent only during off-peak hours.

This archive is for the mailing list sci_tech_xtal@xtal.cmc.uab.edu beginning
in February of 1994. It contains bulk files which are the messages for the
month appended into one file with the file name of the form

    yymmm

where yy is the year and mmm is the month. For example, to obtain all the
messages posted to sci_tech_xtal@xtal.cmc.uab.edu in April 1994, use the
command

    sendme 94apr

To: nmr-str@net.bio.net
Date: Wed, 16 Mar 1994 18:29:16 -0600 (CST)
Content-Length: 2712

Dear Structural NMR readers:

I recently came across a NMR Gopher at the National Magnetic Resonance
Facility in Madison, Wisconsin and would like to share this information
with you.

To access this site you should have a GOPHER client installed in your
system. Those without a gopher client should follow instructions at the
end of this message:

Set your gopher client to the following address:

gopher.nmrfam.wisc.edu

and explore the various menus present there.

Here is a brief list of what is available there:

1. Whole bunch of programs including NMR data conversion routines
accessible via gopher or ftp.

2. A list of forthcoming meetings in the Structural-NMR field

3. Procedures for obtaining NMR time at this national facility

4. Information on the BioMagResBank NMR Database (for further
information contact beverly@nmrfam.wisc.edu)

Users without access to this gopher can telnet to the root gopher at
consultant.micro.umn.edu (login: gopher) and follow the menus until the
NMR gopher is found. If anyone has difficulties, I will be happy to
help.

Users with XMOSAIC can also access this gopher.

Cheers

RIETVELD USERS MAILING LIST (EMAIL NEWSGROUP)

This is to announce the creation of a Rietveld-users
mailing list for people who are involved with the
Rietveld method for structure refinement and/or
quantitative analysis. Tim Buckner, who manages the
University of Alabama Crystallography Information Server
has kindly provided the facilities and setup this discussion
area.

Full information can be obtained by anonymous ftp to :-

sol.dmp.csiro.au:/pub/xtallography/rietveld-mailing-list

or emailing Lachlan Cranswick (lachlan@dmp.csiro.au).

HOW TO BECOME ONE OF THE PARTICIPANTS

To "subscribe"/join to the mail list (no cost is involved)
send email to :-

rietveld-Request@xtal.cmc.uab.edu

with the following message in the body text :-

subscribe

----
You should then receive a confirmation reply via email
including the commands the listserver program recognizes.

------------------------------------------------

MAKING IT EASY TO SUBMIT ARTICLES AND MESSAGES

To make it easy to send articles and messages, try using the
"alias" facility of your email program:-

e.g. alias name email address
     rietveld Rietveld Users rietveld@xtal.cmc.uab.edu

Then when you want to send an article or query , just email it
to "rietveld" and your email software should handle the rest.

==============================================================

If your email program does not support this "alias" option :-
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

a) Consider changing to a "better" email program such as
the public domain (i.e., free) "pine" software which is
available for UNIX, DOS and Mac. This program is very
user friendly and powerful (to obtain binaries, anonymous ftp to
ftp.cac.washington.edu:/pine (140.142.100.6:/pine).

(there are other programs around - e.g., Wintrumpet (MS-Windows),
Eudora (Mac and MS-Windows), etc).

b) Email the old fashioned way to "rietveld@xtal.cmc.uab.edu"
to submit your message or article.
