Cable Modem & Internet Gaming Question

Hi all,

I'm a new user of this high speed Cox@home cable system and have one
very curios question. When playing internet games, Unreal Tournament in
particular, I noticed that if I used the cable modem by itself (no
splitter to TV) which requires an atenuator to cut my signal in half
(5+) my game play performance is much better than if I had a splitter to
the TV (without atenuator and TV is off) which should also cut the
signal by half, right?. SO why is that? The pings I'm getting are the
same on either setup so I don't understand why I play really well (as
far as winning all the time by far) on the single feed w/ atenuator
versus the latter.

I know it's not just my imagination because I tried both setups a few
times so can someone please explain and help me understand why? I'd
truly appreciate it.

Thanks,
Julio

Packet losses due to the lower signal and errors. That is why they
normaly install a cable modem it's own line to the groundblock.

Latency Spikes? What are you smoking? I've been on Shaw@Home for over a year
now and my Quake 2, Quake 3, and Unreal Tournament ping times are amazing!!!
I average a 50ms ping to any good server I get on........

If your having problems.....call your provider...

He's not smoking anything. Here in San Diego the Road Runner system hasn't been
worth a shit for weeks during evenings and weekends. Look at my data
http://miguelito.org/RR/index.html if you want to see what latency is.

Many of us had, over and over. They either don't care, or don't have the
money/talent to fix it.

When you say `I wrote a program that crashed Windows', people just stare
at you blankly and say `Hey, I got those with the system, *for free*'

Then you need to get on the phone with supervisors and managers. I have
RR and have found their tech support to be 110%. Sounds like you have
talked to the wrong person!

You have RR in a completely different city with different managers and such...
the ones here have been unresponive to all of our Emails, calls, etc.

Today, I do note that they've got a message on the network status page:

>> Slowness to some sites on the Internet during evening hours. This
>> internal San Diego networking issue which covers all customers is being
>> addressed by our Engineers, who are working on a networking fix. We have
>> isolated the issue and will be making immediate routing changes internally
>> throughout the rest of the day. Customers may notice intermittent changes to
>> the path to different Internet sites this afternoon.

So at least they've _finally_ admitted that there's an internal routing issue...
and are trying to fix it.

I'm not going to hold my breath though.
