Subject: OS2News: David Barnes is Back with IBM!

 So, did any of you ever want to quit your job?  Be honest now.

 Well, I  wanted to, and I did.  And I can't recommend it to any of you.

 I'm blaming my earlier decision to leave IBM on mid-life crisis
 (or maybe mid-career crisis).  I also started to believe all of the
 negative press IBM is getting.  I started to believe that everybody
 else in the industry had a good handle on the future and that IBM
 just didn't get it.


 So, I left.  I interviewed.  I visited other companies.  I talked with
 recruiters.  I drank a lot and smoked bad cigars.  And what I found
 is that IBM DOES get it and is still number one, and that I was taking
 my job for granted.

 I actually interviewed with one company where the recruiter said "and
 of course you'll have the opportunity to work with a lot of very smart
 people."  You can't believe how much restraint it took for me not to reply
 "did you know that IBM produced more patents last year than any other
 company FOR THE THIRD YEAR IN A ROW!"  She struck a nerve.

 Last week I went to the doctor.  I just wasn't feeling right.  After
 analyzing my blood, he said he found a strain of BLUE DNA in it.
 He called the condition "IBMism" and said that I had it bad.  He told me
 that if I didn't return to IBM soon he couldn't be sure of my mental
 stability.  So, I'M BACK!


I guess after spending 50% of your life as an IBMer, it's more than a job;
it's more like family.

You know, the grass is really much greener on this side.
