Subject: OS2News: Survey - OS/2 Twain Scanner Driver

Solution Technology developed Twain for OS/2 which is a native 32 bit 
multi-threaded implementation of Twain version 1.5. Currently, our Twain 
supports only native OS/2 sessions - adding in WINOS2 sessions have been 
discussed internally but we have no scheduled development cycle for it at 
this time. All drivers developed so far have been unfunded by any scanner 
manufacturer. If we can get scanner manufacturers to pay for development, 
drivers will get a higher priority as well as be available to the marketplace 
quicker.

We are currently in negotiations with several scanner manufacturers to fund 
development of native OS/2 Twain drivers for their particular scanners. So 
far, it seems that these manufacturers are under the impression that there is 
no demand for native OS/2 drivers. Another problem area is in the matter of 
color correction. The Windows and  MacIntosh scanner drivers have built-in 
color correction algorithms. Many times we have requested access to the 
source code and/or algorithms to make the OS/2 drivers on par with the 
Windows/Mac counterparts. Solution Technology is willing to sign any 
necessary non-disclosures relating to proprietary information but I believe 
that this goes back to the make OS/2 die syndrome. Solution Technology will 
develop its own algorithms for color correction if the scanner manufacturers 
do not assist us; it may just take a little more time for us to get that done.

So without giving away internal information, please respond to this post as a 
followup (since they are monitoring the newsgroups now) and also please send 
me a note via email.

What I am interested in in what scanner you have or are interested in 
purchasing. I will list out the drivers we currently have available and in 
development as well as list some manufacturers that seem to be asked for the 
most.

Hopefully, if we can generate the right numbers, the scanner manufacturers 
will see that there definitely is a market for native OS/2 
multi-threaded TWAIN scanner drivers.
