A friend of mine who recently became vegan and I hit la costena yesturday and did the burrito thing. I'm vegetarian but do dairy & eggs. I've been feelings this bloaty, sometimes low level nausea after eating burritos -- I thought it might be the dairy so I started eliminating the sour cream. Anyway, after the burritos I got the same symptoms as before and so did my friend. She asked if the tortillas were made with lard -- apparently most tortillas are. I said I didn't know -- I couldn't imagine needing lard to make them so why would they add it? Well we went back and asked and were told that both the regular and the whole wheat tortillas both are made with lard. I love it how they say their black beans have no lard in them -- but then the tortillas do. Sigh. I haven't talked with the manager yet and dunno if s/he will pay any attention, so if you see someone packing their own tortilla shell to la costena or burrito real in mtn. view and she has blonde hair, you might wanna say "hi"...:-/. ~linda

Shortening is a basic ingredient of tortillas, not an additive - in times past most tortillas were made using lard, but most of the commercial makers are using vegetable shortening now. I would think that a restaurant would have to search the lard type out these days. Definitely talk to the manager - I can't believe that this issue wouldn't have been brought up before, yours may be the deciding vote... -- Dave Cornejo There is nothing so subtle Dogwood Media as the obvious Fremont, California

I don't care as much if they are fat free -- just lard free, thanks! I went down to the store (Safeway) and none of the brands I looked at contained lard. Many advertised no cholesterol/no animal fat. I was told by someone else that I obviously wasn't shopping at a mexican grocery store since most of the authentic tortillas use lard. -linda -- email: law@sgi.com home page: http://reality.sgi.com/employees/law/

Yes, it is highly probable that the flour tortilla is made with lard, almost all of them are. (check the ingrediant list on a pack next time you go shopping). Corn tortillas have either less or none, i can't remember which. pat
