McCarthy era, just about 1950, I think.

I refer you to the one book written by the current president of the University 
of California, David P. Gardner, in the 60's when he was working here at UCSB.
It is called "The California Oath Controversy," and it is an even-handed and 
dispassionate analysis of the whole chain of events around the Oath.
I think like either 17 of 70 professors refused to sign and were fired.  There
was a big hullaballoo about it.
