There are at least two kinds of BOOTP daemon for UNIX extant. One kind, the `CMU daemon,' uses a bootptab format with entries that are similar to termcap entries. The source for that one, in versions 2.0 and 2.1, is readily available for anonymous FTP from many different places. I am after the other kind -- the kind that uses a single-line entry for each host to boot, where the entries look like this: # # host htype haddr iaddr file # X-J05-344-0 1 00:00:A7:00:6F:89 129.78.142.221 Xncd19r I have not been able to find sources anywhere for a UNIX bootpd which uses this format in the bootptab file. (One part of the documentation for the CMU bootpd implies that versions earlier than 2.0 used a different bootptab format. It may be that what I am really after is a pre-2.0 version of the CMU bootpd.) You might well ask why I want this, since this kind of BOOTP server is necessarily less flexible than the other kind. Well, that's the format that the bootpd binary distributed with Ultrix uses, and I have an automatic suite to construct my bootptab file in that format from other information, and I don't really have either the time or the inclination to change that to construct the bootptab file in the other format, and the DEC-supplied Ultrix bootpd has a bug that I'd like to fix, and could fix easily enough if I had the source... Please reply by e-mail; I will summarise if I receive any positive responses. -- John Mackin <john@civil.su.oz.au> Knox's box is a 286. Fox in Socks does hacks and tricks Knox's box is hard to fix. He told me that this was the `Stanford BOOTP format' and suggested I look at Stanford. I couldn't find it there, but an archie search for "bootp.server.shar", which he suggested as a vaguely-recalled filename, turned up precisely one match: at uxc.cso.uiuc.edu in /services/bootp. And that code is just what I was looking for. So thanks again, Steven. (There is also some ROM-able BOOTP client code there, in bootp.client.shar.) -- John Mackin <john@civil.su.oz.au> Knox's box is a 286. Fox in Socks does hacks and tricks Knox's box is hard to fix.
