You really don't understand middle roaders do you? Not medical treatment but actual event. About 14 years ago, I'm working on a large Hospital in Plano, Texas. It was hot summer and there was one Union Trade and one Union contractor...maybe two on the job...electricians and plumbers. Some illegal labor and lots of green card labor. The green card contractors gave no breaks in the hot Texas sun...and they furnished no ice water. Union Contractors have to furnish ice water...and ours furnished Gatorade as well. The green card labor would drink from our water jugs....sometimes with their mouths on the spigot...sometimes they put cold drinks in the ice and retrieved them with dirty hands--different cultures. We have about forty men on the job! We have three to four water jugs on each of maybe ten or twelve floors (can't remember exactly) Hot 100 plus days our apprentices reload ice and water twice a day. About 3 o'clock we start running out of water...sometimes earlier. We are working 10 hours per day...no water except faucet water which has oxides in it from the solder joints...gives you the runs. Every week we have a big safety meeting. About 300 men... 80% of those are green card types working for sleazy contractors that don't furnish breaks or water. Some of our guys are angry. They announce that we will not let them drink from our water. They say their contractors can buy them ice water or they can do without. Everyone agrees we start locking our water up in our lock boxes. One of the Hispanic supervisors gets up and says he will see that his men stay away from our water. I get the floor and tell them all, my bosses, my fellow union brothers....all of them. I was so angry I was shaking and ready to whip anyone who wanted to disagree. I shouted, "As far as I'm concerned whatever part of that ice water belongs to me belongs to any working man that wants it." "I'll not deny any thirsty man a drink of water, I don't care how cheap his contractor is! " That was the end of it. Some of the guys locked their Gatorade and left their water out. Most did not! It was the right thing to do concerning water, and it is the right thing to do with medical care. If I saw someone at a hospital deny anyone medical, I couldn't force them to offer it, but I could raise some kind of hell! Randy R. Cox
