The only thing CarFax will tell you is how many times it's been registered. I know, because I bought the service and used it on a car being sold privately. The seller did not disclose any problems. But CarFax reported it had been written off for salvage. That alone was worth the money. James

My 1986 van was ROLLED OVER and completely written off about 10 years ago... I ran a carfax on the VIN and it came up CLEAN! I've done about a dozen searches (gotta love the freebies) and I've never seen a single report of an accident or writeoff, and I know for a fact that at least three had major damage at one point. It may be better in the US, but for Canadian searches it doesn't help much.

Carfax didn't come up with the info on my van either... It came up clean & it has front end collision damage that was not properly repaired & I had to get it fixed. Then the damn engine gaskets went at 90K... Carfax is not a good one to use... Especially in Canada. They won't back up their lemon inurance either... IMHO - Its not worth wasting money on. Kat...
