NASCAR engineers never would have allowed Space Shuttles Challenger and Columbia to launch. "If that bird ain't safe, we are going to blackflag it until it is!" The problems on Challenger and Columbia were well known before they were sent up on their ill-fated missions. But NASA (and some have suggested the government knew as well) that those problems existed but still allowed the flights to go on. As a result, 7 astronauts were sacrificed to the Gods. NASCAR engineers never would have let those birds fly, given their problems. Whenever there is a car with apparent safety issues, those in charge of NASCAR will not allow that car to participate. NASA would do well to take the same tack when it comes to Space Shuttle launchings! itellitlikeitis (to many, many people's dismay)

I don't think it's Daryll, I think it's his *brother* Daryll. Do many NASCAR "engineers" have a working knowledge of jet proplusion?Trajectory, as it is related to zero gravity situations? Aren't these the same guys who *duct tape* cars back together in order to finish a race? Maybe NASCAR "engineers" (aren't they car mechanics?) could do what Daryll says but wouldn't the shuttle just turn left all afternoon? And then occassionaly hit a wall, and then the astronauts would have to fight each other back at mission control. Any way they're gonna GIT 'ER DUN! I do like his conspiracy theory though, it gets big points for originality and humor. have fun be brave Paul

Maybe they should merge angencies -- best of both worlds. Corporate sponsors all over the shuttle -- 'Budwieser' logo's down the side of each solid fuel booster rocket. And they would henceforth be known as NASACAR. Were you to throw off your vision of redneck bubbas running around in old moonshining cars you would discover that NASCAR engineeers are just that...engineers. Mechanical engineers, and damned good ones at that. Just how do you think that the drivers are abla to survive crashes at the near 200 mph speeds that they drive these days? Because of duct tape? Not likely. Those cars are engineered to withstand the punishment that 500 miles of 200 mph racing dishes out. Think your Monte Carlo would do that? It wouldn't even get near those speeds and if it were to crash would end up in a ball of cruched metal, and YOU wouldn't survive. I think you owe the engineers of NASCAR an apology, and you owe yourself some real research into what it takes to build one of those cars. Taint easy, you know. JimC

Ask the Earnhart and Allison families how safe they think it is to ride at 200+ mph in a NASCAR vehicle. Anne D. <--was there at Pocono the day Bobby Allison wrecked for the last time.
