but I could recomend You two books by the great Feynman:

Feynman, R.P.: "QED - The strange Theory of Light and Matter", 1988
  This one should should give You the answers You're looking for 
  without mathematical treatment.
Feynman, R.P.: "The Feynman Lectures on Physics", Vol. 3
  This one starts with an explanation of quantum principles and
  paradoxa. I used it lots of times before my examns.

If You'd like to have the mathematical treatment, try "QED" by Fexnman
from the early 60s.

[Moderator's note: The title of this book is "Quantum Electrodynamics",
not "QED".  The latter is a widely recognized abbrevation for
the former, but since Feynman has books by both titles it's
a little bit confusing to use the abbreviation in this particular
case.  -TB]
