I'm glad you brought this up, because I've been looking for an excuse to
correct myself. Those words that you attribute to Alton are mine, and I
slipped up on one word. Here's what I meant to say:
For the record, I think that entry-without-renter's-prior-notification
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
stuff is a pretty lousy policy and I don't blame anyone for not liking it.
That makes a lot of difference. My fingers just got ahead of my brain. I
don't think that a property owner should be excluded from his property
just because the renter doesn't want to let him in. On the other hand,
not letting the renter know in advance that you're coming is not very fair
to the renter or respectful of his desire for privacy. Obviously you
can't let the renter know in advance if he's been on vacation for two
weeks at the time you need to enter the property, but you can write a
clause into the lease that says something like this: "We'll notify you
between X and Y days in advance. If you're unreachable for more than Y
days, we're coming in anyway." That way the renter can just assume that
if he's gone for more than Y days, the owner or his agents might enter the
property and the renter should take whatever steps he thinks are necessary
to protect his privacy while he's gone (other than doing lease-breaking
things like changing the locks).

I figured I was blowing smoke. Thanks for being polite in your shoot-down.
