I did the same thing, and with a TAA-affiliated landlord (back when I
rented).  The lease specified "no water-furniture".  I explained that I
had a waterbed and wasn't about to junk it and buy a new bed just so I
could live there.  They struck that portion of the lease.  Not a
problem.  But this requires that you actually *read* what you sign and
not sign it until it is satisfactory to you.  If they won't make the
changes you want, then you should live somewhere else.  It is, after
all, their property and it is up to them to set what conditions of use
they want to upon it prior to leasing it to you.
