http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A51526-2002Sep7.html Although no real fan of Bush the first, the article referenced details fairly well all that should be considered in todays rush to go to war. It also gives good insight into why all those moderate conservatives and retired generals came out of the woodwork to oppose the whitehouse on this issue. The whitehouse is quickly becoming a house of irrationality which must be reined in and brought back to reality. The fanatics within the power circle appear to have once again confirmed "That power corrupts, and total power power corrupts totally." Why do Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rove want so badly to occupy Iraq? For that is exactly what will result with any toppling of the present regime. Absolutely no convincing evidence of immediate peril has come forth from this group. Yet they continue to ignore the counsel of James Baker, Scowcroft, Swarzkopf, and others with great experience in dealing with exactly this region, and issue. You would expect those men, all good conservatives, all good republicans, to be allowed a full hearing. Yet what has happened? The unprecedented need for such people to appeal publicly in the media for their views to be heard. Foe Democrats and other loosly aligned political groups that is common, for conservative or even moderate republicans it is unheard of. "Burke said there were Three Estates in Parliament; but, in the Reporters' Gallery yonder, there sat a Fourth Estate more important than they all. It is not a figure of speech, or a witty saying; it is a literal fact, .... Printing, which comes necessarily out of Writing, I say often, is equivalent to Democracy: invent Writing, Democracy is inevitable. ..... Whoever can speak, speaking now to the whole nation, becomes a power, a branch of government, with inalienable weight in law-making, in all acts of authority. It matters not what rank he has, what revenues or garnitures: the requisite thing is that he have a tongue which others will listen to; this and nothing more is requisite." - Carlyle
