>: identification of the ANI *regardless* of privacy issues. That way I can >: have the ability to automatically call-screen, and you don't have to cough >: out your real name, number, or address or whatever. Seems like the best of >: both worlds since it would address all of the CLID issues I've been hearing >: people yell about... it fixes the pervert-scenario, it doesn't give away >: useful information to telemarketers, and it provides inbound call screening >: and/or dial-up security. A scrambled ID, if the scrambling comes out the same way each time, (which it has to be if you are able to usefully call-screen) gives exactly the same information to telemarketers as an unscrambled one, except your telephone number. They can tie all calls from the same number together, and to what you were calling about. If you've EVER ONCE given out your phone number (or name) when you called with the number blocked, or called someone who recognizes your voice, you've just given away everything. Nobody's mentioned Call Trace, which logs the number of a specific threatening call, and turns it over to the police. I think it's offered whereever Caller ID is, and maybe in some places where it isn't. It would seem to handle perverts nicely, although it's a bit like using nuclear weapons on a mosquito if the problem is neighbor's kids making prank phone calls. Gordon L.
