This petition, however, was turned down due to a lack of signatures or some other bureaucratic mumbo-jumbo. Had there been a referendum, the student body would have brought the axe down on them, and not the AMS. Let's face it--the Ubyssey is NOT a very popular paper. But let's not "censor" the Ubyssey. If they want to keep publishing the sort of material that they have been, they should find their own ways of funding it, like with revenue from advertising, or they can sell for a price at the newsstand. I'm sure it would be a bestseller and cover all its costs. (Yeah right!) Let's face it. This would teach them that covering their own expenses is one of the responsibilities of journalism, and so is the responsibility of printing respectable material. Anyways, so much for articles encouraging students to commit crimes, graphic descriptions of sadomasochistic homosexual activity, little girls biting off their fathers' penises, and other sick, twisted, and perverted stories that do nothing better than to make the people who read them vomit. Just imagine the kind of reaction the engineers would get if they were to print similar sort of material involving heterosexual activity in their nEUSletter, self- funding or otherwise. It just wouldn't be "politically correct" in this case, and they would all get their heads cut off. Well, it's good to see that people are now questionning the "politically correct" and that they are not a special class that can get away with murder. -Bill Y. Kawakami Computer Science/Physics 3
