IMHO the AMS are fooling themselves that they will be doing anything to 
change the _Ubyssey_. Anyone who's been involved in student journalism
knows that certain papers attract a certain membership and that it is very
hard to change that composition even if the impetus for change is from
the paper itself. When the AMS starts up their new paper or the new and
improved _Ubyssey_ the same sort of people (or perhaps the same staff!) will
eventually join up again and in a year or so the 'new' paper will be like
the old. Then in a year the editorial board will fire more people and it
will happen again. This is the nature of volunteer journalism. Unless the
AMS is willing to run a newspaper with a salaried (not stipended) staff,
they will not be accomplishing anything but disrupting the process of 
information gathering and reporting (plus wasting money and resources). If
that is their goal, then it should be made clear to those who support a
change in the newspaper because they want a change in viewpoint not an
end to campus journalism. I would much rather that they begin a public
dialogue to address this disatisfaction with the content than to make such
an obviously authoritarian move.
