Could someone enlighten me as to why UBC is planning to bulldoze the
rose garderns by the faculty club and put up a building
of some sort? Why do they insist on destroying nice areas on campus
for this sort of thing? Why not raze one of the B lots, build a nice
10 storey building with 5 levels of underground parking, and move in there?
Anyone else out there feel that the people who authorized this should
be kicked a few times, if not shot outright?

I agree with your position. Feel fortunate though. At least you are
getting a building out of the deal. Here at UVic we lost our Japanese
garden for the construction of a parking lot. One of the people
responsible was noted to have said something to the effect as, "Here
at UVic we have too many gardens and not enough parking lots."

They are doing what????!!!!???
The rose garden and various other sites at UBC are great tourist attractions during the
summer. I know I've had to give directions to some poor tourist more than once while
leaving various buses during the summer. Where in the world did they get this idea?

>Why not raze one of the B lots, build a nice

This dwould be a great idea not only do we save the rose garden and other senic spots on
campus but get a nice building and probably better parking in the exchange. They won't
do it though because they will feel that it is too EXPENSIVE and than no one will miss
the rose garden anyway.

Well you have my vote on this. But how about a little tourture first :-)

Probably because they already planned to build something on the B lots.

What!!?!!! This is outrageous. Great idea of the UBC administration huh?
Build a bulding where you can house more paying customers, er students.
Doesn't UBC need a place where one can have a quiet lunch outdoors or just
a place for solitude and contemplation?

I vote that they should kill the project.

Absolutely correct. Among other things, two of the B-lots are going to be
converted to Graduate Student housing... I believe another is going to be
converted to a Forestry Research Centre of some type. :-(

I'll let someone else confirm this and post the details.

I enjoy the Rose Gardens very much during the summer and I'd hate to see
them destroyed. I'd also like the gardens between Main Library and
Sedgewick stay intact but they'll be a building there soon too!!

Well, here at UBC, we lost our tennis courts for a _temporary_ parking
facility which has been termed _temporary_ for a looong time. So let's
just rename that to permanent-temporary. So now we can't take strolls
around our rose garden, AND we are left to sit around and grow fat... 8(

Hhmm... even less parking, eh? I'd like to see what happens when this
happens. Forcing people to go green? Looks good on paper but....

It always amazes me that UBC can justify huge expenses for buildings at
the same time that students are being turned away for lack of money and
staff are being laid off.

Are you sure about that? I haven't heard any plans for that area. The
other side of Sedgewick, on the other hand---the courtyard between sedge
and the math building---will soon be replaced with a building. The sign
went up a few days ago. <sigh> Why not build on top of the math annex or
something? It's already survived 50 years longer than intended!

I've heard that once this addition to Sedgewick is completed, Sedgewick
will be taken away from the undergrads and given a new use.

So is Wreck Beach. That's why we've just spent $300,000 erecting an
ugly fence to make it harder to get to.

I'm sure Food Services makes a fair bit of money from tourists.

Ah, yes. Temporary. Math, math annex, old admin, geography. These are
all "temporary" buildings! They were basically the first buildings
erected on this campus...as an interim measure until the permanent ones
were built. Don't hold your breath waiting for the tennis courts to be
restored.

Wait! Wait! Wait!

The plan is NOT to bulldoze the rose garden and build a structure on top.
The plan is to construct an underground parking structure under Marine
Drive, the rose garden, and under Main Mall, and in the process to
renovate the rose garden completely. Apparently, the rose bushes currently
in the garden are quite old and not in great shape, and are in need of
replacement. (I can't be sure; I'm not a horticulturist.) They will be and
there will be a new garden -- probably nicer than the old -- in their place.

There is no building planned in the green space between Main Library and
Sedgewick. The new Library will be in the "pit" between Sedge and the Math
Building, which is currently just a concrete and grass hole which sees
little use.

There is a plan, a little further off, that a parkade be constructed under
McInnes Field next to SUB and that the field be refurbished in the
process;; the tennis courts would then return. They might even do so when
the Rose Garden parkade is built, since the spaces on top of the tennis
courts wouldn't be as sorely needed.

The plans (as they are -- they are very preliminary) should be available
from Campus Planning and Development. Call 822-8228.

Well, I belive the idea is to reduce traffic from the beach past (and into)
Place Vanier residence. This is a real problem -- I stayed there one
summer and the doors were kept locked at all times to stop non-residents
from coming in and using the showers and bathrooms. So while a fence
may not be the best solution, it is not a frivolous problem. I'll
grant you that $300,000 is too much to spend on the and the
construction pace on the fence is glacially slow.

Gather ye rosebuds while ye may,
   Old Time is still a-flying:
And this same flower that smiles to-day,
   To-morrow will be dying.

And if the Faculty Club goes broke around the same time as ground
is broken in the Rose Garden, there will be no more "Time of Wine
