I bet that when shiraz here finishes university, he'll be whining about not
being able to get a job. I always thought you went to university to study.

Silly me

Actually, people go to university to *learn*. At least that's the theory.
It would be a shame to go to university and miss speakers like Owens Wiwa,
who spoke to a packed auditorium and received a standing ovation.

: No doubt Owens Wiwa got a healthy and well deserved ovation. Now tell us how
: many classes you missed while you were listening to him tell you what you
: already know and agree with, while you watched "Delta Force", while you
: watched "Wheres Roger" while you harrassed Macdonalds, and while you did
: all the other things associated with this event.

: Don Wagner

To begin with, the majority of the events held this week are in the
11:30-1:30 time slot, so that many students can attend WITHOUT missing class.

I am currently trying to stay on top of six lectures this term. It keeps
me busy, but does not occupy ALL of my time. I do not think the choice
to spend some of my 'free' time involved in events like these makes me
any less of a student.

And despite any information you may already have had about Shell in
Nigeria, the opportunity to learn from someone who has lived there (as
opposed to the sometimes unreliable media) is a rare one.

And finally, I have found that involvement in groups like culture jammers
or the SEC continues to expose me to issues I was not previously aware
of, while others may hopefully learn from knowledge I have. I happen to
think that this sort of personal growth will be a benefit to me in the
future, as will lectures I attend.

I didn't miss any classes, actually. I don't have any teaching duties during
that time slot.

Just curious: how do you know what I already know...without even knowing me?

I have no doudt that the lecture of mr Wiwa was beneficial, however, the
whole concept of "corporate butt kicking " pisses me off. Perhaps we should
shut down all corporations and see how long your university remains open.

Good luck with your studies
