CRITICAL MASS: BICYCLING'S DEFIANT CELEBRATION Davis Bike Club November General Meeting to feature Chris Carlsson, editor of "Critical Mass: Bicycling's Defiant Celebration." Part protest, part celebration, Critical Mass is a noncommercial, noncompetitive monthly bike ride held in hundreds of cities in dozens of countries since it began exactly ten years ago in San Francisco. More than 5,000 cyclists from throughout the world came to San Francisco on September 27, 2002, to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Critical Mass with a jubilant mass bike ride through the city. A regular Critical Mass participant from the very beginning, Chris Carlsson will appear in Davis at 7 pm on Monday, November 4 at the general membership meeting of the Davis Bike Club. (Free, public welcome.) Carlsson will read from "Critical Mass: Bicycling's Defiant Celebration," the book he edited on the event's 10th anniversary, and respond to questions on Critical Mass and its significance. Carlsson will also present excerpts from the documentary "(We aren't blocking traffic,) We Are Traffic!" (directed by Ted White, 1999) and video highlights of Critical Mass rides in New York City and Milan, Italy. "Critical Mass: Bicycling's Defiant Celebration" (AK Press, 2002, paperback, 256 pgs.) contains essays, personal anecdotes, photos and flyers by dozens of activists and theorists from San Francisco, Montreal, Stuttgart, Milan, Sydney, and seven other cities. More than 40 contributors document, define and drive home the beauty of a quiet ride with a thousand friends, the inspiration of grassroots activism, the hazards of media coverage, and the fight for the survival of our cities. Chris Carlsson is a San Francisco-based activist, writer and artist. His previous publications include "Reclaiming San Francisco: History, Politics, Culture" (co-editor, City Lights Books, San Francisco: 1998) and "Bad Attitude: The Processed World Anthology" (co-editor, Verso Books, London: 1990). The Davis Bike Club promotes interest in all aspects of bicycling, from recreational cycling for every skill level to racing and commuting, and sponsors the annual Davis Double Century, the Foxy's Fall Century, the 4th of July Criterium and numerous club rides. Membership information is available at B&L Bike Shop or via the club's Web site, www.davisbikeclub.org.
