The IOC apparently disagrees. Published reports this morning indicate that
for the first time in memory--including the violence-marred games in Mexico
City and the games in Munich that saw 11 Israeli athletes killed by Arab
terrorists--the Atlanta Olympics will not be declared "the best Olympics
ever".
: commericalism: I don't know what the hell everyone is talking about.
I've never understood this particular complaint either. Coomercialism is just
a part of sports and has been for years. That's why you have Winston Cup
stock car races, the Virginia Slims tennis tour, and the Drano/Amway/
Republican Party Sugar Bowl. That's not to mention the advertisements for
Clyde's Gas, Beer, 'n' Bait in right field of the Little League ball park or
the ads for Junior's Hauling Service in the program for high school football
games.
: the only problem: sometimes (10% of the time) scores were reported late
: (i.e. 2nd heat 200m results were posted during the 4th heat) this happened
: 3 times, and really, it only is a problem for the media, because we saw
: the finish! this happened 3 times in 4hrs, and the scores were only 10
: minutes late. hell, IBM is handling the scoring, so whada expect?
If I'm reading the reports correctly, this is the hot button issue that
sent the IOC over the edge. Getting information out to the international
media is a high priority for the IOC, and the information systems in
Atlanta simply haven't done that to the IOC's satisfaction.
: overall, after two days of events (and with 2 to go), I had a good feeling
: about humanity and I'm proud to be a Georgian. thats not bad considering
: 1) I drove in Atlanta, 2) I rode MARTA, 3) I was around 120,00 other
: people all day.
I hope I'm wrong and that most people left the Olympics with this feeling.
