DOS Boot in ME?

Can someone please confirm if it is possible to boot into DOS (not
just run a DOS window) using WinME. I have heard conflicting info on
this and need to know ASAP.
TIA

Just a "straight" W98 boot disk?
W95 too?

you need to use a boot disk from 98 or 95c no earlier because of fat32.. if
you use an earlier disk Fat16 you wont be able to access your hard disk..
any boot disk should do it.. no need for it to be one of them there
"startup" disks.

what do people here think about neptune?? with this many problems occuring
with people wanting dos in ME whats going to happen when its gone
completely!!! (or have MS whimped out again and included some form of dos?
anyone tried the beta??)

Thanks, but the URL is not recognised by tripod. Did find this:..

http://betaxtreme.hypermart.net/winmefiles.htm

..which has the patch previously mentioned.

Quite apart from the fact that I'm a bit of an old DOSser, I need the
command line to flash the firmware in a DVD-ROM drive to make it
region free/region selectable. This procedure comes with dire
warnings, the only thing I've done like this is to fire upgrade
patches at my US Robotics modem, which continues to function but those
were official upgrades.

its not possible as it is in 95/98,, but you can still use a boot disk to
boot dos and there is also a crack/patch out there somewhere on the net to
re-enable dos mode as we know it.. dont know where it is though..
hope that helps.

Officially, no.

Unofficially, you can use a W98 boot disc, or there are hacked versions of
the WinME emergency boot disc which allow a normal real mode DOS.

Mark..

FAT32 was actually introduced with OSR2, aka Win 95b.

Phil Martin wants to boot a Win ME machine in DOS mode:

I expect you can put the flash utility and binary files all on one
bootable floppy. Then you can boot any version of MS-DOS and do your
thing with no reference to the hard disc.

If you want to maximise available conventional memory without using a
memory manager, and to minimise flopy disc space used by the
operating sytem, try MS-DOS 2.11! (MS-DOS 1 is a bit limited.)

Best wishes,

This is exactly what the instructions for the hacked firmware for my
Pioneer DVD drive suggested

Goto this site and download mfddme13.zip (8 kb) and follow
instructions at the site.

Note: I have not tried this as I have not elected to upgrade to WinME
as of now.

Thanks for that - I'd actually come across it via some other link, but
it's very comforting to know it's tried & tested :)

Thanks for all the replies.
