Get a SCSI one. No, really. You can get IDE writers working via
a kernel recompile, but SCSI is best for an OS like linux.

Least painful method ? Get an external one -you won't need to alter
anything on linux (or need any drivers/kernel support) since it
appears as a fast modem, and you don't use up a slot.

The disadvantages of this is an extra box on the desk (but with more
flashy lights ;) an extra mains plug used up, and longer ping times
(only relevent if you're an online quake-head).
