As you may or may not know. I've been conducting a petition over the past months to see if there was any support for an official port of the Macromedia Shockwave Plugin for Netscape. The response to my petition has been overwhelming and recently there has been rumours on http://slashdot.org/ about the fact that Macromedia is considering/ or even is already porting to Linux. At the moment there is no way of knowing whether this is true or not and so just in case Macromedia still have any doubts about whether the demand is there for the shockwave port I've decided now is the best time to present my petition to them. I'll let you know of any official response of Macromedia via my website: http://www.linuks.ukpost.com/advocacy/shockwave.html For those who don't know: After I started my petition I discovered there was a development of an unofficial Shockwave plugin (not by Macromedia) - the good thing about it though is that it is Open Source. I've just been informed that the latest version (0.4) will be released to the public soon and I have been sent a copy to try out. Although it isn't perfect it manages to render Shockwave 3 intensive sites such as http://www.metrofm.co.uk/ to a reasonable extent so that they can be navigated. With earlier versions this wasn't easily possible so it offers a vast improvement over previous versions. Even though this plugin has improved since it's early days and is a definitely usable alternative to the official plugin I still believe official support of the Linux OS by Macromedia is vital for two reasons: 1. The Linux plugin can be kept up to date with 'enhancements' to the Shockwave specification 2. There's more chance of the Macromedia authoring tools also being ported to Linux (if you want them) The Open Source plugin is available at: http://perso.club-internet.fr/odebon/flash.html Please note the latest version 0.4 may not appear for a few days. It's worth waiting to get that version. -- David Hallowell <linux@cableinet.co.uk> LinUKs <http://www.linuks.ukpost.com/> The ultimate UK Linux site Want Shockwave for Linux??
