Hi there,
I have a few Linux boxes, in the main running RH4.2 and are generally quite
similar. One machine is _extremely_ slow in connecting via ethernet. When
pinged, it responds in around 1.5mS(ish) but when telnet'ing, the connection
is instant, but the login prompt can take 30-60 seconds to appear. Similar
time delays apply to ftp and http conections. Once the connection is made,
response is pretty well normal (as far as I can tell). Console logins are
normal.
The machine concerned uses a SiS chipset and P75/30MB (the other 2MB are
used by the onboard SiS graphics) and uses IDE disks. The software build is
pretty much "straight out the box" RH4.2. It's primary use is an Intranet
server although I intend to add dns and dhcp serving when this bug is out
the way.
I suspect the Intel EE16 NIC (it may have "forgotten" its IRQ or address
and be clashing with something else), but before I down the machine to
change the card (at the weekend) has anybody have any other ideas, for
example some strange incompatibility with the on-board graphics?
TIA
Geoff

Check that the target machines's resolver is configured correctly and is working, and that there are forward and reverse DNS entries for the host you are connecting from. > The machine concerned uses a SiS chipset and P75/30MB (the other 2MB [..] Were I a betting man I'd put a tenner on this not being a hardware problem.

Do a large FTP (30 or so megs) and give us the time figures. I see around 600k/sec over my dodgy ethernet (Win95 (64Mb, P200) + 2 Linux (DX4/100/120, 16Mb, 250Mb) + 1 Win3.11 (DX2, 16Mb, 130Mb)) which isn't bad. I have heard some horrible things about these. Try a normal graphics card. TB

There's something wrong with your DNS configuration. The Linux machine is trying to do a reverse DNS lookup to discover the source of the connection and this lookup is timing out. >The machine concerned uses a SiS chipset and P75/30MB (the other 2MB are >used by the onboard SiS graphics) and uses IDE disks. Set up the DNS now and you should find the problem goes away. HTH John -- John Winters. Wallingford, Oxon, England. Sounds like your resolv.conf is wrong. Make sure that it is pointing to a valid DNS server of that your hosts file is right. -- Jason Clifford Genesis Linux Systems http://genesis.ukpost.com
