HP Laserjet 4L, 5L, or 6L: which to buy, for Win 2K

I've been offered a choice of HP Laserjet 4L, 5L or 6L, at a
satisfyingly ridiculous low price. Which should I go for? Are drivers
available, for Win 2K?

Drivers aren't the issue you need to worry about, availablilty of toner
cartridges is.

FWIW I have both 4L and 5 (*not L) . I have had no problems with the 4L
over the years but only with 95A & B. The HP5 runs off a Win98SE system
at the moment but has run attached to Win95A, B, Win NT 4 and Win XP
with no problems and over a P to P network of all of these. XP needed
no additional drivers - was recognised immediately.

Sorry I can't speak for Win 2000

The HP5 has far better bitmap graphics, being 600 dpi against the 300 of
the 4L

I buy mine - for both - from Office World or Viking. So far no problem
- fingers crossed - but the 4L is getting long in the tooth.

Go for the 6L, will work fine under 2k, i think it may even auto-detect.
The 4L has a bigger footprint, and the 5L is pretty much the same as the 6L
apart from a few minor changes that i've not found yet. A proper HP toner
for it should be no more than 40.

I wouldn't worry about that, we've got a 4L in the office still (that works
under 2K) and have no problem getting toners for it. Our maintenance people
told me once (when the fuser broke) that the engine was used in a shit load
of different printers not just HP and will be around for a long time yet so
spares aren't really a problem either (just now). I don't know about the 5L
and 6L but the toner on the 4L seems to last forever unlike the newer
Brother lasers we have in the office which use toners like it's going out of
fashion.

The 6L has a recurring problem with feeding multiple sheets and toner is
expensive for the amount of toner.

I have used 6L for over three years and found the quality of prints
excellent both with Win 95 and win 98, and I have no doubt that it would
perform satisfactorily with Win 2, however a warning:
It did not cope with large spreadsheets and had to add memory
which is costly.
Secondly, when trying to introduce shortcuts for special
characters the printer ejected the first sheet of a print with the
special characters printed. I replaced the driver, fitted the printer to
other computers, removed the added memory and none solved the problem
suggesting that somehow the memory of the printer has been changed.
Eventually I found that after logging on, by disconnecting the power to
the printer for a few seconds, this problem was solved.
Thirdly, my printer has early developed the annoying habit of
other HP printers of pulling several sheets of paper for printing even
though I have taken care to use good quality and dry paper. Currently I
hand feed the paper individually. Test print before buying!
Lastly, I would advise that you should buy original cartridges,
honestly it is not worth risking the problems reloaded cartridges can
give. I had one that leaked and it took me ages to partially dismantle
the printer without being able to clean the inside of the printer
properly, especially the sponge fitted to a rotating shaft that pulls
the paper into the print area.
