I am running Win 98SE on a Pentium II 450, with 384 MB of RAM. One of the applications I run, Turnpike, (e-mail and news client) crashes regularly, and I'm told it only happens to a couple of users, with my particular version of Windows. The vendors have indicated that they are unsure as to the cause, and unlikely to be able to fix it. I've been offered an unwanted, and legitimate, retail copy of Windows ME. What's the going rate for that, say at Computer fair? What about Win 2000? What advantages, and disadvantages, would upgrading to either of those offer me? I don't fancy XP much. Given that my machine is a Dell Dimensions, what are my options for upgrading the processor? -- Andy Mabbett The next virus you download could be the one which wipes your hard-drive. You'll get the same problems as its basically Win98 with an updated GUI. > What's the going rate for that, say at Computer fair? Windows 2000 is alot more stable and if an app crashes it very rarely brings down the system. -- _________________________ Conor Turton conor_turton@hotmail.com ICQ:31909763 _________________________

Tanks. How much is the gong rate and where's a good pace to look for a cheap, but legitimate copy? -- Andy Mabbett The next virus you download could be the one which wipes your hard-drive. Don't bother...it's bloody awful. Either use Outlook Express (or whatever it's called this year) or use separates such as Eudora for EMail and Free Agent as a newsreader. >I don't fancy XP much. If you must change the OS, then XP is probably the better bet, but dunno if Turnpike would work with it. Best find out first before investing in XP! J+

I suggest you keep looking elsewhere for the cause. For the last three years I've been running all varieties of Turnpike on a Dell Dimension Pentium II 450 with 128MB and now 256MB of RAM without suffering crashes. I'm about to replace this with a Dell 4400 P4 1.8Gig and haven't decided yet whether to instal the copy of W2kPro I have had hanging around for a year. I hadn't bothered with the Dimension because 98SE has done so well. -- David Lawson - London www.davidlawson.co.uk

If you are not a gamer (though network Quake plays very well on a NT4 machine), have you considered NT as an option. Certainly more secure than W98, available for about 12 (with proper licence). Very stable now (finally) with sp6 plus hotfix pack. Should run nicely on your system. Obviously if you've got USB or Firewire stuff you're going to have problems (basically they don't work in NT) W2K is still going through service packs! Service pack 3 is about to be announced! >Given that my machine is a Dell Dimensions, what are my options for >upgrading the processor? Probably not worth it? Ram is enough IMO even for W2K. I suppose you've checked that the CPU isn't overheating ie is well conncted to the heat sink?

While the fault may lie elsewhere, the crashes are definitely related to TP; and are always triggered by an event within TP (usually posting something). -- Andy Mabbett The next virus you download could be the one which wipes your hard-drive. But as I - and many others - don't get them with W98SE, I would have thought it worth looking further rather than changing the OS. Otherwise you may go through all the hassle and find the same thing happening. I found in the past that crashes like this were related to quirky RAM or graphics drivers. For some reason, TP seems to be unforgiving with either. -- David Lawson - London www.davidlawson.co.uk
