Can't load win98 on virgin disk

I have re-formatted my hard disk because of problems and have put on
command.com and io.sys. Using a win98 (and have also tried a win95) boot
disk I am trying to load win98 fresh from a cd.
Every time I try to load the win98 software I get the following error
message within a few seconds of starting, 'standard mode:invalid dpmi
return from 039f:0906'. It would appear to be when the win98 setup
program opens up a new screen display.
Some help would be appreciated so I can get the sick computer working
again.

On the CD should be a file 'setup.txt' which has various details
of how to setup Win98. This file mentions this error, and what to
do about it!

Harry.

(Just a hunch). Regards, Jay.

I once had trouble with a re-install of '98. The problem was that there wasn't enough free memory in DOS for the install program to work. When booting from a floppy only have the minimum of drivers etc. loaded (the CD drivers and little else!), and make maximum use of HIMEM.SYS and EMM386.EXE. (Assuming this may be your problem). -- _____________________________ Posted by Al. | Sir Dinbych in Wales. | Cymru _____________________________

Ah. You didn't mention that! <grin> In which case I would
suspect faulty hardware of some sort.

Harry.

If mem. is an issue and you have the correct hardware, including a new enough bios, you could boot from the cdrom? Thus saving any dodgy memory configs. I am assuming you have error checked the HDD ? (using scandisk, chkdsk, norton offerings and the like)? (Assuming this may be your problem). Not a problem for me, Roger. Was replying to the original post. If I have to re-install '98, I back-up to Zip; format c: /u without rebooting - keeps the CD drivers in memory; then run install from the CD. Avoids all this memory problem. -- _____________________________ Posted by Al. | Sir Dinbych in Wales. | Cymru _____________________________

Er - as there is only one range there I suspect that either
you didn't manage to type it correctly, or you have a severe
hardware error which is memory related.

Harry.

I have just had to totally re-install a notebook. Created a dos boot
disk from an existing win98 pc. IE the dos is that from win98
and when the dos disk boots it says win98 in the text when loading
dos.
The config.sys only contains
files=20
buffers=8
device= to load cd driver
device= to load page stuff for keyb in autoexec
country=
autoexec.bat only contains
path=a:\dos where dos utilities copied from windows\command reside
eg fdik, format, attrib, edit, keyb, mscdex, etc
mscdex to load cd driver
mode= for page stuff
mode= for page stuff
keyb uk,....
which is almost as simple as it can be (except for page stuff
to enable proper keyboard mapping)
Booted from this, ran
format c: /u/s to clear down hd and put win98-dos onto hd
(suppose /s not really required)
then inserted win98 cd and ran d:\win98\setup
No ems,highmem,etc ie KISS principle
worked wonderfully.
Dunno if this helps...
Only you can tell if you have h/w problems
BTW win98 recognised and set up all the h/w correctly - much to my
surprise, incl pcmcia, screen controller, sound, infrared, the lot...
only got the monitor (lap top 800x600) slightly wrong
(I wasted ages getting all the drivers prior to starting) :(
