Pentium III or K7 Athlon?

I'm about to slap out on an uber machine, and am currently weighing up
the pros and cons of a Pentium III 600 against one of these new fangled
K7 Athlon chips. Word is that the Athlons are very fast and offer
significant benefits over the Pentium, but what are the drawbacks?

But not so hot for intensive Photoshop/graphics/video stuff or working
with loads of applications open, apparently.

I do video editing and even with complex effects, the CPU processes
faster than the SCSI disk can deliver.

You will need to buy premium priced 133MHz RAM and as with any spanking new technology, the problems haven't surfaced yet. TB - Demon's 'dodgy' - use tomsnews@sunscreen.cx to email me

PC100 SDRAM will work just fine, and AMD have apparently done a sterling job with the Irongate chipset - no incompatibility probs with any AGP cards (see Tomshardware, for example). Talking of Celerons and stuff, I'm getting an L500 soon (if Dell can find
the
part they seem to have lost). They *are* just as good as the next 500Mhz
processor I take it? I've never noticed any benchmark results in any mags
I've read.
Scott.

You will only need to buy 133Mhz RAM (which by the way is about the same price as 100Mhz RAM anyway) if the memory bus runs at 133, so far ive only seen 100Mhz memory bus specs on the 1st batch of mobos to come out. > > Athlon is the dog's bollocks from what I have seen. Sounds like you need more RAM and a faster SCSI. The real weak point in
the Celerons is the SMP systems lose processing to overhead. The larger
cache makes for much better SMP computing.

Strangely, guy.fawkes@error404.surfbaud.co.uk (Guy Fawkes) felt the need to say: >when you sayb"PIII" do you mean real p3 as in xeon??? I seriously doubt it. A xeon isn't a p3 is it? If it is I imagine it has a ton of cache & goes at breakneck frequencies. Anyway, it certainly isn't something most of us mere mortals will be using to run Quake 3 Arena. If I was buying, I'd go for the Athlon. McChris <www.bigfoot.com/~chris.mccormack/> "If we don't succede, we run the risk of failure." - Vice President Dan Quayle

The only real drawback is that it will not work in a Slot 1 motherboard(As used by PII,III and Celeron) The Athlon is about on par the the PIII for integer calculations, but it streaks ahead with its Floating- Point Calculation speeds, which means if you are doing anything with video/Graphics the Athlon is the one to choose. Hope this helps, Cheers, Russky - Microsoft MCP ms <mike@nospam.demon.co.uk> wrote in message news:B$MM+bAQpQx3EwPZ@urban75.demon.co.uk... > I'm about to slap out on an uber machine, and am currently weighing up > the pros and cons of a Pentium III 600 against one of these new fangled > K7 Athlon chips. It is known as 'Slot A'. Mechanicaly it is similar to Slot 1,
and electricaly it is similar to the Alpha.
Future Intel processors will be using yet more varaiations, so you
will just have to get used to it! <grin>
